  • ElevenLabs Alternatives for YouTubers & Podcasters (2026): Compared by Use Case

Short answer: If you need natural-sounding narration in many languages and a voice clone of yourself, ElevenLabs is still the most complete all-rounder for non-coders. Its Creator plan ($22/month, $11 for the first month at the time of writing) covers about two hours of speech a month. The alternatives make sense in specific cases:

    • Tight budget, lots of minutes: Fish Audio Plus ($11/month billed annually) gives roughly 200 minutes a month.
    • You hate paying for retakes: WellSaid charges for downloaded minutes, and generation is unlimited on paid plans, but individual plans are English-only.
    • Podcasters who edit by transcript: Descript bundles AI voice, voice cloning and a full audio/video editor.
    • Long scripts on a yearly budget: Speechify Studio’s $100/year Starter plan includes 24 hours of voiceover a year.

All prices below were checked on each provider’s own pricing page on October 26, 2026, and are in US dollars excluding tax. Prices and promotions change often, so check the linked page before you buy.

How this comparison was made: We compared published plans, limits and licensing terms for every tool. On October 24, 2026 we also created free accounts with three of them: we generated speech in Fish Audio, checked the free-plan limits inside Descript, and tried to generate the same text in ElevenLabs, which its free tier blocked for our connection (details below). We have not used Speechify Studio or WellSaid ourselves, and we have not run side-by-side listening tests, so nothing here is a verdict on voice quality.

What we tried ourselves (October 24, 2026)

    • Fish Audio (free): we generated a 145-character YouTube intro line. It took about 3 seconds, produced two takes at once, and the MP3 downloaded on the free plan.
    • ElevenLabs (free): we could not generate anything. Clicking “Generate speech” opened an “Unusual activity detected” notice saying free-tier usage was temporarily disabled for our connection, so we have no generation or download result for ElevenLabs.
    • Descript (free): we checked the free plan’s limits in the app (100 lifetime AI credits, 60 media minutes a month, watermarked exports). We did not generate AI speech or spend credits.

What actually matters if you don’t code

Most “ElevenLabs alternatives” lists are written for developers comparing APIs. If you make videos or podcasts, four things matter more than latency or SDKs:

    1. A browser editor where you paste a script, fix pronunciations and export audio without touching an API.
    2. How retakes are billed. Some tools charge every time you regenerate, others charge only for what you download.
    3. Commercial rights on the plan you pick. Several free tiers exclude commercial use, which matters the moment a video is monetized.
    4. Minutes per dollar for your volume. A 10-minute weekly video is roughly 40–45 minutes of narration a month. That number decides which plan you need.

    Comparison table

Tool Free tier Cheapest paid option for creators Included volume Retakes / billing Commercial use
ElevenLabs 10,000 credits/month (~10 min TTS) Starter $6/mo ($1 first month until Nov 1, 2026); Creator $22/mo ($11 first month) Starter ~30 min, Creator ~121 min of TTS/month Credits charged per generation; some free regenerations if text and settings are unchanged From Starter (not on Free)
Fish Audio 8,000 credits/month (up to 7 min of generation), max 500 characters per generation Plus $15/mo, or $11/mo billed annually ($132) 250,000 credits (~200 min)/month Credits per generation; unused credits don’t roll over Paid plans only; Free is personal, non-commercial use
Speechify Studio 600 credits Starter $100/year 86,400 credits (24 h voiceover/year) 1 credit per second of voiceover; re-exporting unchanged audio is free Paid plans only
WellSaid 3 download minutes/month $19/mo (20 min/mo), or $10/mo billed annually ($120, 240 min/year) Counted in downloaded minutes Unlimited generation on paid plans Paid plans only
Descript 60 media minutes/month + 100 AI credits (one-time, “Lifetime”) Hobbyist $24/mo, or $16/mo billed annually 10 media hours + 400 AI credits/month AI credits; the pricing page doesn’t say how much AI speech a credit buys Paid plans (Free exports are watermarked)

Sources for every row are listed at the end of the article.

    ElevenLabs: the benchmark

What you get (per elevenlabs.io/pricing, checked October 26, 2026):

    • Free: $0, 10,000 credits a month, text to speech, speech to text, sound effects, voice design, music and 3 projects in Studio. No commercial license.
    • Starter: $6/month (a promotion offers $1 for the first month until November 1, 2026). 30,000 credits, commercial license, Instant Voice Cloning, 20 Studio projects, Dubbing Studio.
    • Creator: $22/month ($11 the first month). 121,000 credits, Professional Voice Cloning.
    • Pro: $99/month, 600,000 credits, 192 kbps audio.
    • Annual billing equals 10 months’ price (two months free), e.g. $18.33/month for Creator.
    • Text to speech uses about 1 credit per character on the standard models. Paid plans roll unused credits over for up to two months; Free does not.
    • The plan comparison lists 74 languages for text to speech.

    Pros

    • Instant voice cloning from the $6 plan, professional cloning from $22.
    • One credit pool covers narration, dubbing, sound effects and music.
    • Credit rollover on paid plans softens slow months.

    Cons

    • Credits are spent per generation, so heavy retakes eat into your quota.
    • Dubbing is credit-hungry: 2,000–10,000 credits per minute depending on mode, per the pricing FAQ.
    • The free tier is for testing only (no commercial license).

What we saw on the free plan (October 24, 2026): we signed up for a free account (no card was requested) and pasted a 145-character test line into Text to Speech. Before generating, the interface showed 10,000 credits a month with none used, counted our text as 145/10,000 characters, and offered a long list of preset English voices plus a large community voice library under “Explore”.

When we clicked “Generate speech”, ElevenLabs showed “Unusual activity detected”: free-tier usage had been temporarily disabled for our connection. The notice explains that free access can be blocked when unusually high activity comes from the same IP address, for example in offices, schools or on VPNs, and that paid accounts are not restricted by these IP-based checks.

So we could not check generation speed, actual credit use or downloads on the free tier. The figures above come from the pricing page and the interface, not from a voice test. We have not used voice cloning, which requires a paid plan. Practical takeaway: if you try ElevenLabs Free from a shared network or VPN, you may hit the same block.

Fish Audio: most minutes for the money

Fish Audio’s Plus plan is $11/month billed annually ($132/year) or $15 month to month, with 250,000 credits, which the pricing page describes as up to about 200 minutes of generation. Plus also includes 10 private voice slots, one professional voice slot and voice design. The free tier gives 8,000 credits a month, up to 7 minutes of generation and up to 500 characters per generation, which is short for a full script.

Commercial use is not allowed on the free plan. Fish Audio’s terms (effective date August 18, 2024) say: “You will only use the Services for your own internal, personal, non-commercial use … if you are a user of Paid Services, you are licensed to use the Services for commercial uses”. The pricing page FAQ says the same: free-plan content is for personal, non-commercial projects. If your videos are monetized, you need a paid plan.

When we used the app on October 24, 2026, the upgrade window also showed a time-limited “50% off your first year” offer. We use the list price from the pricing page in this comparison; check whether a promotion applies when you buy.

What happened when we used it (free plan, October 24, 2026): we created a free account (email code plus password, no card) and pasted the same 145-character intro line we had used in ElevenLabs into Text to Speech.

    • Character limit: the counter showed 145/500, matching the 500-character cap per generation on Free.
    • Models: we used Drama 3, the newest model in the list. The list also offered S2.1 Pro, S2 Pro (marked Legacy) and S1 (marked as retiring on December 31, 2026). None was marked as locked on the free plan.
    • Speed: generation took about 3 seconds.
    • Two takes per click: Fish Audio generated two audio samples side by side so you can pick the better one.
    • Download: worked on the free plan. We got an MP3 straight away (128 kbps, mono, 8.9 seconds).
    • Credits: the Text to Speech page did not show a credit balance on the free plan, so we couldn’t see how many credits the test used.
    • Upsell: right after the download, an upgrade window listed “Commercial use allowed” as a Plus feature, which matches the terms.

We did not try longer scripts split into chunks, voice cloning or any paid feature.

Pros: the most minutes per dollar in this comparison at the Plus level; fast generation and two takes per click when we used it; MP3 download works on Free.

Cons: unused credits do not roll over; the 500-character free-tier limit means a full script must be split into pieces; the free plan is for personal, non-commercial use only; no credit balance shown on the free Text to Speech page.

WellSaid: pay for what you keep, not what you try

WellSaid’s model is different: paid plans include unlimited generation, and you are billed for downloaded minutes. The $10/month plan (billed annually at $120) includes 240 minutes a year. Month to month it is $19 for 20 minutes or $49 for 180 minutes. The $33/month annual plan includes 2,160 minutes a year and up to 48 kHz audio.

Pros: retakes don’t cost anything on paid plans; full commercial rights on paid plans; caption files included.

Cons: individual plans list “All English voices” (other languages are on the custom enterprise tier); the free tier has no commercial rights; no voice cloning is listed on the individual plans.

Good fit if: you narrate English-only explainers and tweak every sentence until it sounds right.

Descript: for podcasters who edit by transcript

Descript isn’t a pure voice generator. It’s an audio/video editor where you edit the recording by editing its transcript, with AI voice built in. Hobbyist ($24/month, or $16/month billed annually) includes 10 media hours, 400 AI credits, watermark-free 1080p export and AI Speech with custom voice clones. Creator ($35/month, or $24/month billed annually) raises that to 30 media hours, 800 AI credits and 4K export.

What we saw on the free plan (October 24, 2026): we created a free account (no card requested). Sign-in is passwordless: Descript emails you a code each time. Inside the app, the free plan showed:

    • 100 AI credits in total, labelled “Lifetime”: a one-time allowance, not a monthly one.
    • 60 media minutes a month for transcription and media.
    • Watermarked exports: the app prompts you to upgrade for watermark-free exports.

The in-app plan picker for our Swedish account showed prices in kronor, billed monthly: Hobbyist SEK 248/month, Creator SEK 362/month and Business SEK 672/month.

We deliberately did not spend AI credits, so we can’t say how many credits an AI speech generation or a voice-clone fix costs. We also have not used recording, transcript editing or voice cloning.

Pros: fixes a flubbed word in your real recording without re-recording; transcription in 25 languages (including Swedish); remote recording included; no card needed to try the free plan.

Cons: if you only need narration, you pay for an editor you won’t use; the free plan’s 100 AI credits are a one-time allowance and exports are watermarked; the pricing page doesn’t say how many minutes of AI speech the credits cover.

Speechify Studio: long scripts on a yearly budget

Speechify Studio (a separate subscription from the Speechify reading app) costs $100/year for Starter with 86,400 credits, or $300/year with 345,600 credits. Voiceover uses 1 credit per second, so that’s 24 or 96 hours of voiceover a year. Dubbing uses 3 credits per second. Re-exporting unchanged speech is free, but pitch, speed or emotion changes are regenerated and cost credits.

Pros: a lot of hours for the price if you produce long-form content; commercial rights on paid plans; stock media included.

Cons: only annual plans are listed; the free plan has no commercial rights and, per the FAQ, you need a paid plan to download MP3s.

    Which one should you pick?

    Your situation Pick Why
Weekly YouTube video (~45 min narration/month), want your own cloned voice ElevenLabs Creator ~121 min/month and professional cloning
Same volume, cheapest possible Fish Audio Plus ~200 min/month for $11–15
English explainers, lots of retakes WellSaid Unlimited generation, billed on downloads
Interview podcast, need to patch mistakes Descript Hobbyist Editor + voice clone in one
Audiobook-length scripts once or twice a year Speechify Studio 24 h/year for $100

Don’t choose ElevenLabs if you only need English narration and you regenerate a lot (look at WellSaid), or if you mainly need a podcast editor (look at Descript). Don’t choose the cheapest option if your channel is monetized and the plan you pick doesn’t clearly grant commercial rights.

    FAQ

Is there a free ElevenLabs alternative I can use commercially?

Not among the tools above. ElevenLabs Free, Fish Audio Free, Speechify Studio Free and WellSaid Free all exclude commercial use according to their own pricing pages or terms. For monetized videos you need a paid plan.

Which alternative is cheapest per minute?

Based on published allowances, Fish Audio Plus (~200 minutes for $11–15/month) gives the most minutes per dollar among the monthly plans here. Speechify Studio Starter is cheaper per hour if you’ll actually use 24 hours a year.

    Do unused credits roll over?

ElevenLabs paid plans roll unused credits over for up to two months. Fish Audio states that unused credits do not roll over.

Can I clone my own voice without coding?

Yes. ElevenLabs (Instant Voice Cloning from Starter), Fish Audio (voice slots on Plus) and Descript (custom voice clones from Hobbyist) all offer voice cloning in the browser. We have not used voice cloning in any of them.

Does ElevenLabs offer a yearly discount?

Yes. Annual billing costs 10 times the monthly price, which works out to two months free.
